The Counterflippers – A Flippin’ Good Keto Irish Coffee
An easy to make, keto inspired, cold Irish coffee cocktail recipe you will love!
This week’s Bon Appeteach “Book Club” cocktail is drawing inspiration on the the classic “flip”. A flip (if you’re not familiar) is a cocktail that is made with an egg white and typically is seen with sherry or other fortified wines.
This week’s book, The Counter “flippers” (aka counterfeiters) is a complicated story with several plot lines about illicit romance and a counterfeit ring. With the upcoming St. Patrick’s day weekend celebration among us, I thought I would combine all the great flavors of Irish coffee and take a “counterflipp” and keto friendly approach on making this drink.

A Flippin’ Good Keto Irish Coffee:
- 2 oz. Irish Whiskey
- 2 oz. Espresso or Strong Coffee (let it cool to room temp)
- Splash of Averna Amaro
- 1/2 oz. Keto Simple Syrup
- 1 Egg White
Shaken, Not Stirred:
What I love most about the addition of an egg to a cocktail is the mouthfeel. It provides a rich and velvety texture that is unique and delicious.
A flip cocktail is a definitely a drink you must shake. In fact, you first need to shake it dry first in order to emulsify the mixture with the egg white. Start by pouring the whiskey, espresso, averna amaro, and the keto simple syrup into a shaker. I like to shake this dry first for a few seconds to mix everything. Then add the egg white and shake again.
Yes, there is a raw egg white in this cocktail. If this is something that concerns you, you can definitely use a pasteurized egg instead.
Finally, add the ice and shake until chilled. Double strain into a coupe glass and serve. Dust the top with a little more espresso powder if desired (this also helps mask the smell that the egg white sometimes has.

A Flippin’ Good Keto Irish Coffee
Ingredients
- 2 oz. Irish Whiskey
- 2 oz. Espresso or Strong Coffee let it cool to room temp
- Splash of Amaro Liqueur
- [1/2 oz. Keto Simple Syrup ]
- 1 Egg White
Instructions
- In a cocktail shaker (without ice) first combine the whiskey, espresso, averna amaro and simple syrup together. Then add the egg white and shake again until emulsified. Finally, add the ice and shake until chilled.
- Double strain into a coupe glass and add a pinch of espresso powder to the top of the cocktail. Garnish with cocoa powder or a little bitters (optioal)
