Tequila Mockingbird- Tequila Sunrise
Tequila Mockingbird- Tequila Sunrise:
If the name fits, right? This week’s Bon Appeteach “Book Club” is taking a look (and by look I mean just using the play on words to create a killer cocktail) at a classic novel and a classic cocktail. Tequila is one of my favorites personally; I know this may be a controversial stance. To each their own. This week’s drink focuses on a fun breakfast/brunch themed libation, the Tequila Sunrise. Because I love you all so much, I will share two different ways to make this fun drink (classic and a keto friendly)! I think you will really love this week’s cocktail, Scout’s honor (pun intended).
Find the full recipe(s) for the Tequila Sunrise below but read on for tips and tricks!
Tequila Sunrise:
Classic:
1 and 1/2 oz. Tequila
3 oz. Fresh Orange Juice
1/2 oz. Grenadine
Garnish with Cherries & Orange Slice
Low Carb:
1 and 1/2 oz. Tequila
3 oz Orange Club Soda
1/2 oz. Sugar Free Grenadine (recipe included)
Garnish with Cherries & Orange Slice
Shaken, Not Stirred:
The Tequila Sunrise is so simple! Only three easy ingredients and a little patience goes a long way. You will need a cocktail shaker for this. Good rule of thumb; most citrus based cocktails are typically shaken. This helps not only chill the drink but dilute it a bit as well (in a good way). Get a cocktail shaker and add your ice cubes, pour in the tequila and fresh squeezed orange juice. Give it a good shake. I mean…like REALLY shake it (pretend your filming a commercial for the shake weight…something…just channel that energy). Pour it into a highball glass through a strainer. Now, here is where your patience comes in. Are you feeling patient? Ok. Good. Slowly and carefully pour the grenadine into the glass and allow the grenadine to settle at the bottom. Finish the cocktail off with an optional single ice cube, garnish with a orange wedge and a delicious high quality maraschino cherry (I like the Luxardo cherries because they are uhhh-maze-ing).
Food Pairing:
Girls gotta eat. Does this explain my low carb lifestyle (ha, I kidd…kinda)? Let me first start with a few facts about the novel, To Kill A Mockingbird. The book takes place during the depression era. When I was coming up with this weeks food pairing I wanted to keep this in mind. I also wanted to tie in references of food from the book but somehow manage to make it something snackable and somewhat breakfast themed to go with my Tequila Sunrise. This weeks food pairing are these heavenly Low Carb Chicken and Waffle Bites. If you aren’t a low carb/keto/Paleo eater you can simply swap out the almond flour and use regular flour/bread crumbs. What I love about this is how the oven “fried” chicken ties into a breakfast that was eaten after the trial in the book. This honestly, is going to be one of my newest obsessions. I added a slice of bacon, some slice pickles, a little stone ground mustard, and topped it with a drizzle of sugar free syrup (use maple or regular if that’s your thing). I literally could cry this makes my taste buds so happy. Does someone have a tissue???
Well, I hope you enjoyed week four of my Bon Appeteach “Book Club” series. Be sure to scroll up and check out previous weeks to get caught up. You can also always find me on Instagram every Friday (and watch the highlights) to see how I make this cocktail “in person”. Cheers to Tequila Mockingbird and to this Tequila Sunrise!

Instructions
Get a cocktail shaker and add your ice cubes, pour in the tequila and fresh squeezed orange juice.
Give it a good shake. I mean...like REALLY shake it (pretend your filming a commercial for the shake weight...something...just channel that energy).
Pour it into a highball glass through a strainer.
Slowly and carefully pour the grenadine into the glass and allow the grenadine to settle at the bottom. This takes a moment so be patient!
Finish the cocktail off with an optional single ice cube, garnish with a orange wedge and a delicious high quality maraschino cherry (I like the Luxardo cherries because they are uhhh-maze-ing).
Low Carb Version- Combine the tequila and ice and shake. Pour into the glass. Fill with the orange flavored club soda and slowly add in the sugar free grenadine. This version IS STRONG! So you may want to play around with the adjustments and ratios to fit your preference and I suggest using a high quality tequila.
Notes
Sugar Free Grenadine- Make by adding equal parts pure cranberry juice to a sugar substitute (swerve, erythritol, stevia, etc.) Allow it to simmer for 5 minutes or so and reduce. Cool to room temperature before using and store in the fridge.
