Prime Rib Rub Recipe

This prime rib rub recipe combines a blend of aromatic herbs and spices like rosemary, thyme, garlic powder, and smoked paprika, creating a crust that’s both flavorful and beautifully caramelized. The mix also includes coarse salt and freshly ground black pepper, enhancing the meat’s natural flavors and ensuring a juicy, tender roast every time.

What Is Prime Rib Dry Rub?

Prime rib dry rub is a blend of aromatic herbs and spices that you can make at home to increase and enhance the flavor of your prime rib! This is a spice blend that goes well with prime rib specifically, to help create a crust that is extremely flavorful with a tender and juicy interior.

Prime rib rub, however, can also go well with other proteins and is a wonderful and versatile spice blend to have on hand!

Why This Recipe Works

Perfect Balance of Flavors: This prime rib dry rub recipe has the absolute perfect blend of flavors! With salt and pepper included, you only have to reach for one spice blend to season your prime rib after this is prepared. The smoked paprika offers a slight kick with undertones of smoky flavor and the rosemary and thyme balance those bold flavors with an herbal flavor! This prime rib spice blend is bold enough to stand up to red meat without being too overbearing, so you can still taste the essence of the tender prime rib.

Homemade Goodness: Homemade is always better, right? And this prime rib rub recipe is no different! I love to make spice blends at home, like my cajun BBQ dry rub or homemade pastrami dry rub, because I know exactly what is going into it! No hidden preservatives or MSG. The only downside is that it can lose its freshness more quickly, so make sure you have plans to use up your homemade spice blends within about 2 months!

Supplies Needed

  • Mixing Bowl
  • Spice Grinder, if desired

Ingredients

  • Kosher Salt: I like to use a coarse kosher salt or sea salt!
  • Black Pepper: I also prefer a coarse ground black pepper, but whatever black pepper you have on hand will do.
  • Garlic Powder: Garlic powder provides a depth of savory flavor.
  • Minced Dried Onions: Minced dried onions are great for a little texture, but you can also use onion powder!
  • Rosemary & Thyme: You can also use an Italian spice blend, which usually has rosemary, thyme, basil, oregano and marjoram. I find that just rosemary and thyme lend a lovely, herby flavor!
  • Smoky Paprika: For a slightly smoky flavor that goes well with a roasted or smoked prime rib!
  • Mustard Powder: Ground mustard provides a bit of a kick, and adds a level of complex flavor!

How To Make Homemade Prime Rib Rub

  1. Combine: In a large bowl, simply combine all the spices and mix well. I prefer a slightly coarser style rub for this recipe. If you want a finer rub, blend in a spice grinder until you get the desired texture before using it!

Using And Storing

  • To Use: You can use this prime rib rub as desired on prime rib, other cuts of bee (I use it on the smoked bottom round roast), or any other protein, veggies, or sides. This spice blend would be delicious on chicken breast, beef roast, or pork roast!
  • To Store: Store in an airtight container at room temperature! You can store it for about 2 months. After that, it will start to lose flavor!
