How To Make A Bread Bowl

Creating the bread bowl is one of the best parts of this recipe and easier than you might think:

  1. Cut the Top Off: Using a serrated knife, carefully slice the top of the bread boule. Aim for a straight cut to create a clean edge.
  2. Hollow It Out: Remove the center of the bread to form the bowl, leaving about 1 inch of bread around the edges for stability. Save the inside bread chunks for serving.
  3. Slice Slits: Lightly score 1-inch slits along the edge of the bread bowl. This allows the gooey brie to melt into all the nooks and crannies, making it the perfect finger food.

Baking Instructions and Tips

  1. Preheat the Oven: Set your oven to 350°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly coat it with cooking spray.
  2. Layer the Ingredients: Spread a layer of fig jam in the center of the bread bowl. Add half the brie cheese cubes, followed by more fig jam. Repeat with the remaining brie and fig jam for melty brie perfection.
  3. Bake: Tent the bread bowl with aluminum foil to prevent over-browning. Bake for 20-25 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for another 5-10 minutes until the brie cheese is melted and golden brown.
  4. Serve: Garnish with a drizzle of honey or fresh thyme for a fragrant touch. Serve warm with apple slices, baguette slices, or extra bread chunks.

Pro Tips:

  • Bring the brie cheese to room temperature before baking for even melting.
  • Use garlic butter on the edges of the bread bowl for added flavor.
  • If you’re looking for crunchy toppings, add chopped nuts like pecans during the last few minutes of baking.

What To Serve With Brie

This baked brie bread bowl is a delicious appetizer that pairs well with:

Savory Additions: Serve alongside a savory side like roasted nuts or olives for a balanced appetizer game.

Fresh Fruit: Apple slices, pear wedges, or fresh berries complement the creamy brie and fig jam.

Crackers or Bread: Baguette slices, sourdough chunks, or crusty bread are great choices for dipping and scooping.

Drinks: A glass of wine, particularly white wine, or even a tangy apple cider enhances the flavors of this dish.

  • 1 lb. Brie Cheese cubed
  • 8 oz Fig Spread or other preserves

  • Fresh Rosemary or Thyme
  • Pepper Jelly

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350 F.
  • Cube the brie cheese into pieces and set aside.
  • Cut the top off of a large round loaf of sourdough bread. Remove the top and remove the inside bread to create a bread bowl.
  • Use a knife to lightly cut 1 inch slits down every 1-2 inches across the top edge of the bread bowl (see pictures in the article above).
  • Place about 1/3 cup of the fig spread into the bottom of the bread bowl and spread it evenly.
  • Add half of the brie cheese and another 1/3 cup of fig spread dolloped over the top. Pull back slightly along the cut edges to help fully stuff the bread bowl with the cheese.
