Why This Recipe Works

Twist on a Classic: This smoked bloody Mary recipe features fresh plum tomatoes that are smoked to perfection in the smoker, and then blended into a juice to add to the mix! This adds a layer of complexity to the classic Bloody Mary mix, enhancing its depth and giving it a signature flavor.

Balanced Flavors: Horseradish, Worcestershire sauce, and optional tabasco provide the right amount of kick without overpowering the smoked elements in this cocktail. Plus, the addition of fresh lemon and lime juice brightens everything up perfectly!

Toppings Galore: Let’s be honest, the best part about a Bloody Mary cocktail is the plethora of toppings! You can make this drink practically into a meal. Feel free to customize each glass with a variety of garnishes like smoked bacon, smoked shrimp, celery, pickles, and more!

Supplies Needed

  • Wire Rack
  • Blender
  • Mixing Bowl
  • Pitcher
  • Cocktail Shaker

Ingredients

For The Bloody Mary Mix

  • Plum Tomatoes: Fresh plum tomatoes hold up well to smoking and deliver a sweet, slightly tangy flavor when blended into the mix!
  • Spices: I used a combination of celery salt, garlic powder, paprika, and black pepper in my smoked Bloody Mary mix! This also makes a great seasoning for adding to the outside rim of the glass as well.
  • Horseradish: Gives the cocktail a nice, sharp heat without being too overwhelming.
  • Worcestershire Sauce: For a tangy and savory umami flavor that complements the smoked tomatoes.
  • Lemon & Lime: For a hint of brightness to balance out the smoky and spicy flavors.
  • Tabasco: This is optional if you want a touch of heat to your drink, but can be adjusted based on personal preference.

For The Cocktail

  • Tomato Juice: Tomato juice is added to add more liquid to the mix.
  • Vodka: Vodka is the classic alcohol used in Bloody Marys. It adds a punch while allowing the smoky and spicy flavors to shine through. You can also add tequila as an alternative.

Toppings: These toppings are optional, but would all be great additions to your Bloody Mary cocktail-

  • Celery Stalks
  • Pickle Spears
  • Smoked Shrimp
  • Smoked Bacon
  • Cheese Cubes
  • Olives
  • Lemon & Lime Wedges

Variations

There are many variations to a smoked bloody mary that you can make instead of this one! Besides switching out the toppings according to your liking, you can also switch out the type of alcohol that you use. Feel free to try any of these bloody mary variations:

  • Smoked Mezcal Mary: Replace the vodka with smoky mezcal for an even more intense smoky flavor!
  • Virgin Smoked Bloody Mary: Skip the alcohol for a non-alcoholic version that still packs a flavorful punch.
  • Bloody Maria: Use tequila instead of vodka for a fun twist on the classic!
  • Spooky Bloody Mary: For a Halloween-themed cocktail, I highly recommend trying my black vodka bloody mary recipe instead!
