Low Carb Smoky BBQ Sauce Recipe
It’s no secret that I love to grill, and I especially love some good ol’ BBQ. Considering I live in Kansas City, I am no stranger to it either and often indulge.
The only downfall to this is the lack of low carb and keto friendly BBQ sauces that are available. The one’s I have tried also tend to have a strange after taste (maybe from the low carb sweeteners) and sometimes have strange additives as well.
I wanted to create a standard BBQ sauce that would work for almost any dish, whether is was for Smoked Keto Ribs, this oven baked BBQ chicken, or even for fish! I wanted the sauce to be a smoky, spicy, and a little sweet. After a few attempts, I think I nailed this recipe and love how easy it is to make too!

“School” Supplies:
- Medium Saucepan
- Measuring Spoons/ Cups
- Whisk
- Jars (optional- I like them for easy storage)
“Class” Notes:
For this recipe, I tried to keep the ingredients to a minimum, but still have it provide a nice punch of flavor. Most of these items you probably already have on hand in your own pantry already, so it should be fairly easy and stress free to toss together!
The base of this BBQ sauce is canned tomato sauce. I typically look for an organic brand in hopes of limiting any added sugars or additives (definitely need to watch out for this in tomato products).
I heat the sauce over medium low and combine it with the other ingredients and spices. The most notable is probably my Keto Simple Syrup.
I opted for the Keto Simple Syrup over just dumping in some low carb sweetener because I like the added texture. A regular gold or white granulated low carb sweetener will dissolve and be sufficient, but the texture may be slightly different overall.
To add flavor, I do use a small amount of liquid smoke. If you are a fan of grilling smoking, you could even smoke infuse this yourself on the grill and opt to leave out this flavor additive.
I prefer this sauce to be a bit on the spicer side. I added cayenne and Tabasco sauce to taste to kick up the heat. Use however much you prefer to taste!
Once everything comes together in the saucepan, simply combine with a whisk and allow it to simmer for about 5 minutes or so. You can serve the sauce immediately, but the flavors are better when the sauce has more time to marinade.
I like to prep the sauce typically the night before, place it in a jar, and store in the fridge. This allows for a stronger smoky BBQ flavor to develop and can easily be reheated on the stove again before using.
Store the sauce in your fridge for up to a week, or place in a storage bag and freeze until you are ready to use it! I hope you enjoy this easy to make, keto friendly, smoky BBQ sauce recipe! Be sure to let me know how this recipe turned out by rating it below or leave a comment!
